In recent years, travelling abroad for cosmetic surgery has become increasingly common. Turkey, in particular, has developed an international reputation as a destination for aesthetic procedures. Competitive treatment costs, convenient travel connections and the opportunity to spend time in a popular Mediterranean destination may all influence a patient’s decision.
For some people, treatment abroad can appear to offer an attractive combination of surgery, travel and privacy. However, price and destination are not the only considerations. Every patient has different priorities, and for many, confidence in their surgeon and access to continuing care closer to home may be equally—or even more—important.
A personal choice to have otoplasty in the UK
We recently had the pleasure of treating a Turkish gentleman living locally who approached MACS Clinic for correction of prominent ears, also known as otoplasty or pinnaplasty.
Although aesthetic plastic surgery is widely available in Turkey and may often be provided at a comparatively lower cost, our patient chose to undergo his procedure in the United Kingdom. His decision was not presented as a judgment on the quality of surgery available in any other country. Rather, it reflected his own preferences regarding consultation, communication, the clinical environment and access to postoperative care.
Following a detailed consultation, his concerns, expectations and the limitations and potential risks of surgery were discussed. An individualised operative plan was developed with the aim of achieving an improvement that remained natural and proportionate to his facial features.
The procedure was subsequently performed at MACS Clinic, followed by planned postoperative reviews and guidance throughout his recovery.

Instead, this experience illustrates a broader and more balanced point: aesthetic surgery is increasingly international, but patient choice remains individual. Just as some UK residents decide to travel overseas, people of different nationalities—including those from countries well known for competitively priced aesthetic surgery—may choose to receive treatment in the United Kingdom.
Ultimately, the best decision is not necessarily determined by nationality, geography or price alone. It is the decision reached after careful research, a properly informed consultation and consideration of the complete journey—from the initial assessment and operation to recovery and longer-term follow-up.
