I saw a 60-year-old pleasant lady complaining of difficulty in wearing earrings as her Ear Lobules were split. Understandably, she was very upset. I did discuss with her that the strength of the collagen fibres within ear lobule skin becomes weak with maturity of age, the heavy earrings will also contribute towards splitting of the Ear Lobules and widening of ear lobule holes.
I discussed with her that the split Ear Lobule can be repaired under local anaesthetics as an office procedure. It leaves behind a scar which normally gets matured and becomes inconspicuous within 18 months’ time. I also assured her that I will do ear piercing by myself using sterilised ear piercing unit with aseptic precautions.
We perform the procedure under local anaesthetics. The ear lobules were dressed with skin colour paper dressing. I will be seeing her tomorrow to remove the paper dressing from the Ear Lobule.
The sutures are absorbable and will dissolve over a period of 10 to 15 days time. I will advise her to take shower on a daily basis and apply a thin smear of topical antibiotic ointment.
This pleasant lady returned back after four days following the split Ear Lobule Repair. The skin colour paper dressing was removed.
The absorbable sutures will dissolve within 10 to 15 days time. She will return back for Ear Lobule piercing after six weeks using pre-sterilised ear piercing kit taking aseptic precautions at MACS clinic.
