Nipple size and projection can be a source of self-consciousness for both men and women. At MACS Clinic, we regularly see patients seeking discreet, minimally invasive solutions to address prominent or enlarged nipples that impact comfort, confidence, or daily activities. This blog explores the indications for nipple reduction, the differences between male and female nipple reduction techniques, and what to expect before and after surgery.

Why Do Men Seek Nipple Reduction?
Many men visit our clinic with concerns about excessively prominent or projecting nipples. Common reasons include:
- Discomfort During Exercise: The nipples may rub against tight clothing—especially while running—causing pain, irritation, and even chafing.
- Visible Projection Under Clothing: Some men feel socially awkward or self-conscious when the nipple contour is noticeable through T-shirts or fitted garments.
- Camouflaging Techniques: We have seen patients use makeshift solutions such as adhesive tape, padded plasters, or compression garments (including male bras) to hide nipple prominence—often with limited success and daily inconvenience.
At MACS Clinic, we provide a surgical solution to this issue that restores comfort and confidence.
Why Do Women Seek Nipple Reduction?
In women, the motivation is often aesthetic, psychological, and sometimes intimate:
- Naturally Enlarged or Elongated Nipples: Certain ethnic backgrounds may be more predisposed to prominent nipples, which may not reduce significantly after puberty or breastfeeding.
- Intimacy and Confidence: Patients frequently tell us they feel embarrassed about the visibility or shape of their nipples during intimacy or while wearing swimwear or fitted clothing.
- Apparel Concerns: Even when wearing a bra, elongated nipples may remain visible through certain fabrics, impacting wardrobe choices and body image.

What Makes Male and Female Nipple Reduction Different?
While the fundamental goal—reducing projection or size—is similar, the surgical techniques differ:
- In Men: The primary aim is to reduce both projection and, when necessary, diameter. Since men do not require preservation of milk ducts, the tissue removal can be more straightforward.
- In Women: Special care is taken to preserve the lactiferous (milk) ducts wherever possible to maintain breastfeeding potential. This requires more nuanced surgical planning, especially in younger or nulliparous women.
The Procedure: Safe, Quick, and Performed Under Local Anaesthetic
Nipple reduction is a short outpatient procedure performed at MACS Clinic:
- Anaesthesia: Local anaesthetic only—no general anaesthetic or sedation needed.
- Duration: Approximately 40 minutes.
- Technique: The nipple is reshaped or shortened, and redundant tissue is carefully excised.
- Sutures: Mr. Vadodaria uses fine, dissolvable sutures for minimal scarring.
- Medications: Prophylactic oral antibiotics are prescribed along with paracetamol and a codeine-based analgesic for post-operative comfort.
- Cost: From £1500
These prices may vary based on factors such as the type of anaesthetics used, unilateral or bilateral nipple reduction required, and your choice of clinic or hospital. Following your consultation with Mr. Vadodaria, a final cost estimate will be provided to you.

Post-Operative Instructions from MACS Clinic
After your procedure, follow these simple yet essential aftercare steps:
✦ Wound Care
- Keep the dressing dry and intact for the first 48 hours.
- After 48 hours, you may gently clean the area with saline or cooled boiled water, and apply a light ointment or antiseptic cream if advised.
- Avoid direct water pressure (e.g., showers) on the nipple for 5–7 days.
✦ Activity
- Avoid strenuous upper body exercise or chest workouts for 10–14 days.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing to prevent friction during the first week.
✦ Monitoring
- Expect mild swelling and bruising for 7–10 days.
- Contact us if you notice increasing redness, discharge, pain, or fever.
✦ Follow-Up
- We usually arrange a review appointment within 1week and 6 weeks time to assess healing.
Results and Expectations
The goal is a natural-looking nipple that is flatter, smaller, and in better proportion to your chest or breast. Most patients are extremely satisfied with the aesthetic and functional outcome. Scars are usually discreet and fade over time.
