Postoperative Care Following Nipple Reduction Surgery

Posted on: 27 Aug 2025

At MACS Clinic, we understand that undergoing nipple reduction surgery is both a physical and emotional step toward improving comfort by reducing the size and projection of the nipple. While the procedure itself is relatively minor and can often be performed under local anaesthesia, the quality of your recovery and the long-term success of your results largely depend on how well you follow postoperative care instructions.

This blog outlines important do’s and don’ts after nipple reduction surgery, helping you achieve the best possible outcome.

  1. Immediate Postoperative Care
  • After the procedure, your nipples will be dressed with light protective dressings.
  • You may notice mild swelling, bruising, or sensitivity — this is normal and usually improves within 1–2 weeks.
  • Keep the surgical area clean and dry as instructed by your surgeon.

  1. Dressings and Wound Care
  • Your dressing should remain in place until your first review (usually within a few days).
  • Change dressings only if advised by the clinic.
  • Avoid applying creams, ointments, or antiseptics unless specifically prescribed.
  • Do not submerge the area in water (baths, swimming, hot tubs) until cleared by your surgeon. Showers are usually permitted after 48 hours, but gently pat the area dry afterward.

  1. Clothing and Support
  • Wear loose, breathable clothing to prevent rubbing or irritation.
  • Avoid tight bras or tops that compress the nipple area for at least 4–6 weeks.
  • If you wish to wear a bra earlier, choose a soft, non-wired option and ensure it does not press directly against the nipples.

  1. Medications
  • You will be prescribed a short course of oral antibiotics to reduce infection risk — complete the course even if you feel well.
  • Pain relief medication may also be given. Most patients experience only mild discomfort that settles within a few days.

  1. Activity and Lifestyle
  • Rest on the day of surgery, but gentle walking is encouraged to maintain circulation.
  • Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or gym workouts for at least 2–3 weeks.
  • Protect the surgical site from trauma — do not lie face down or put pressure on your chest.
  • Avoid involving your breasts in intimate activities until cleared at your follow-up appointment.
  • Smoking and alcohol should be avoided during the early recovery period, as they can impair healing.

  1. Healing and Scar Care
  • Incisions are usually very small and placed discreetly, but proper scar care is important.
  • Once the wounds are fully healed, your surgeon may recommend scar creams, silicone gels, or sheets to optimise healing.
  • Protect scars from sun exposure for at least 6 months, as UV light can darken scars.

  1. Warning Signs – When to Seek Help

Contact MACS Clinic immediately if you experience:

  • Increasing pain, redness, or swelling
  • Pus-like discharge or foul odour
  • Fever, chills, or feeling unwell
  • Any sudden change in nipple colour (turning pale, bluish, or very dark)
  • Significant bleeding from the wound

  1. Follow-Up Appointments
  • Your first follow-up is usually within the first week to check healing and remove or change dressings.
  • A second review may take place within 4–6 weeks to assess the final results.
  • Further visits may be scheduled if needed.

  1. Long-Term Results
  • Most patients notice an immediate improvement in nipple shape and size.
  • Final results become apparent after swelling has subsided, usually within 6–12 weeks.
  • The scars typically fade over time and are discreetly placed to remain barely visible.

  1. Emergency Advice

If you cannot reach your surgeon and feel your condition is urgent, seek help promptly through:

  • NHS 111 (for non-emergency advice)
