Post-Operative Care Following Dimple Creation Surgery at MACS Clinic

Posted on: 17 Sep 2025

At MACS Clinic, patient safety and satisfaction are our highest priorities. Dimple creation surgery (dimpleplasty) is a minimally invasive local anaesthetics cosmetic procedure performed as a day case, but proper post-operative care is essential to ensure smooth healing and reduce complications. Below are the detailed guidelines we provide to every patient after the procedure.

Immediate Post-Surgery Period

  • Observation: After the procedure, patients are monitored briefly at the clinic to ensure there are no immediate complications such as bleeding or excessive swelling.
  • Discharge: Since dimple surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, patients are usually discharged on the same day with a prescription of antibiotics, antiseptic gargles and analgesics tablets.
  • Initial Appearance: The dimples may appear prominent at rest immediately after the procedure. This is normal and will gradually soften over time.

Managing Swelling, Discomfort, and Bruising

  • Swelling: Mild swelling of the cheeks is expected for the first 2–3 days. Cold compresses may be applied externally to help minimize swelling.
  • Pain Relief: Patients may experience mild soreness or discomfort inside the mouth. Pain is generally minimal and can be controlled with prescribed painkillers.
  • Bruising: Some patients may notice slight bruising inside the mouth or on the cheeks, which usually resolves within a week.

Dietary Recommendations

  • Soft Diet: A soft diet is recommended for 3–5 days to reduce irritation to the surgical site. Examples include soups, mashed foods, yogurt, and smoothies.
  • Avoid Hot & Spicy Foods: Spicy, acidic, or very hot foods should be avoided during the first few days as they can cause discomfort and delay healing.
  • Hydration: Drinking plenty of fluids is encouraged, but patients should avoid using straws for the first week as the suction movement may disturb healing.

Oral Hygiene and Wound Care

  • Mouth Rinses: Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential. Patients are instructed to rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash (such as chlorhexidine) after meals for at least one week.
  • Brushing: Gentle brushing of teeth is permitted, but patients should take care to avoid disturbing the inside of the cheeks near the surgical site.
  • Smoking and Alcohol: Both should be strictly avoided for at least 1–2 weeks as they significantly increase the risk of infection and delayed healing.

Activity and Lifestyle

  • Work and Daily Activities: Most patients can resume normal daily activities immediately. There is usually no need for downtime.
  • Exercise: Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that increase facial strain should be avoided for about one week to prevent bleeding or swelling.
  • Facial Movements: Patients are encouraged to smile and move their face naturally, but excessive manipulation or unnecessary pressure on the cheeks should be avoided.

Follow-Up Appointments

  • First Review: Patients are usually scheduled for a follow-up visit within 5–7 days after surgery to assess healing and check for signs of infection or complications. We encourage our patients to be seen face2face, but they may chose to having a video follow ups if they need travelling long distance provided they don’t have any postoperative issues e.g.bleeding,, infection or fever etc.
  • Second Review: Please organise a second review in 6 weeks with MACS clinic to see Mr Vadodaria
  • Suture Care: The sutures used are dissolvable and typically disappear within 6 weeks to 3 months . No removal is required.
  • Progress Monitoring: Further reviews may be scheduled depending on the individual healing response and patient satisfaction with the results.

What to Expect During Healing

  • Initial Phase: Dimples may appear exaggerated and visible even without smiling in the first 1–2 weeks.
  • Settling Phase: As healing progresses, swelling subsides, and the tethering of skin to muscle relaxes, resulting in a more natural-looking dimple that is more visible when smiling.
  • Final Results: Most patients see the final appearance of their dimples by 3 to 6 months after surgery.

Possible Warning Signs

Patients are advised to seek medical advice ( Your GP surgery or Accident and Emergency department) immediately if they notice any of the following:

  • Persistent or severe pain not relieved by medication.
  • Excessive swelling or redness of the cheeks.
  • Pus discharge, foul taste, or signs of infection inside the mouth.
  • Bleeding that does not stop with gentle pressure.
  • Asymmetry that worsens or becomes bothersome over time.

Long-Term Care and Maintenance

  • Once healed, dimples generally remain long lasting. However, in some cases, their depth may reduce slightly as the tissues remodel.
  • Patients should continue maintaining good oral hygiene and overall facial care.
  • Routine dental check-ups and facial skincare complement the results of dimple creation surgery.
